The Lycee Francais de Shanghai (LFS) is an AEFE (Agency for French Education Abroad) institution that serves the children of Shanghai's French and Francophone community. It operates two campuses: one in Qingpu, in western Shanghai, and another in Yangpu, in the northeast of the city. Together, they educate several hundred students from preschool through Terminale (12th grade).
The LFS follows the French national curriculum in its entirety. Mathematics is taught according to French methodology: proofs, deductive reasoning, abstract formalism. Students sit for the brevet des colleges and the French baccalaureate. And this is where Shanghai's paradox reveals itself in full force.
Shanghai is the highest-performing city in the world in mathematics according to PISA rankings. Chinese students are trained in a system of an intensity that few Westerners can imagine: hours of daily practice, math competitions from primary school onward, a culture of quantitative excellence that permeates the entire society. But this Chinese excellence is of no use to an LFS student. Chinese mathematics and French mathematics, though they share the same foundations, are taught and assessed in radically different ways.
Chinese math vs French math: a clash of methodologies
Chinese math education is intensive, repetitive, and performance-oriented. Students solve dozens of exercises per day. The emphasis is on speed of execution, memorization of standard methods, and the ability to rapidly process complex problems. The gaokao -- China's university entrance examination -- is a test of speed and endurance where every second counts.
French math education is deductive, formalist, and proof-oriented. Students are not assessed on their ability to find the answer quickly, but on their ability to construct a complete, rigorous, and structured argument. From middle school onward, mathematical writing is a grading criterion: it is not enough to give the correct result -- you must prove why that result is correct. By Terminale, "prove that..." exercises are central to baccalaureate assessment.
A Chinese tutor, however brilliant at mathematics, cannot help an LFS student. They teach speed where the French curriculum demands rigor. They teach repetition where the French curriculum demands proof. They teach finding the answer where the French curriculum demands proving it. These are two opposing mathematical philosophies, and a student who mixes the two approaches produces poor results in both systems.

College (6eme - 3eme / grades 6-9)
At the LFS, college-level difficulties are amplified by isolation. When a student struggles in mathematics in Paris, options are plentiful: private tutors, intensive courses, online academic support, specialized academies. In Shanghai, there is nothing. Parents find themselves alone with their child's gaps, often without the mathematical expertise to help themselves.
The shift from concrete to abstract -- literal calculus in 5eme (7th grade), geometric proofs in 4eme (8th grade), functions in 3eme (9th grade) -- is a critical juncture. LFS students who miss this turn accumulate gaps that the rest of their trajectory will only worsen. The brevet des colleges, at the end of 3eme, is a first warning signal: a weak result in mathematics at the brevet is a sign that lycee will be painful.
Lycee (Seconde - Terminale / grades 10-12)
Lycee at the LFS is the moment when the absence of local support becomes a major handicap. Seconde marks a brutal qualitative leap: functions, vectors, trigonometry, probability. The level of formalism explodes. Students who had acceptable grades in college sometimes find themselves failing -- not from lack of intelligence, but from lack of method and rigor in their mathematical writing.
In Premiere and Terminale, the mathematics specialization is formidably demanding: sequences and series, limits, continuity, differentiation, integration, conditional probability, combinatorics. Every concept comes with proof exercises that require total mastery of deductive reasoning. LFS students aiming for honors at the baccalaureate or admission to French preparatory classes have no margin for error. And they have no local resources to prepare.
Physics and chemistry
French-curriculum physics and chemistry are another area where local support is nonexistent. French physics is deeply mathematized: the laws of mechanics, optics, and electromagnetism are taught with rigorous mathematical formalism that bears no resemblance to the Chinese approach. Exercises require proofs, literal calculations, and precision in expressing results that neither Chinese tutors nor Shanghai's international tutors can provide. The student is judged on the same scale as classmates who have benefited from the academic support available in Paris throughout their schooling. If they have fallen behind in mathematics during their time in Shanghai, for lack of a competent tutor, that gap transforms into an immediate handicap.
Worse still: preparatory class applications and Parcoursup examine transcripts from the entire lycee period. A weak term in mathematics at the LFS does not magically disappear because the student has returned to France. It remains in the file and weighs in the evaluation. Maintaining a constant level of excellence, even on the other side of the world, is not a luxury -- it is a strategic necessity for the rest of the academic trajectory.
