College (5eme - 3eme): where everything is decided

The college years are decisive in the French mathematics trajectory. Between 5eme and 3eme, students acquire the fundamentals that will condition everything that follows: writing geometric proofs, mastering algebraic manipulation and factoring, working with algebraic identities (identites remarquables), introduction to functions and equations. The Brevet des colleges at the end of 3eme constitutes the first serious milestone.

An FIS student who falls behind at this stage accumulates a deficit that becomes exponentially harder to address at the lycee level. The French program is designed as a pyramid: each level rests on the one below. If the foundations of mathematical rigor are not solid in 3eme, the structure collapses in Seconde.

Lycee (2nde - Terminale): specializations and post-bac stakes

At the lycee level, mathematical expectations intensify dramatically. Seconde is a pivotal year where mathematics becomes significantly more abstract. In Premiere and Terminale, students who choose the mathematics specialization -- an essentially mandatory choice for anyone targeting scientific or engineering studies -- face a program of considerable density: derivatives, continuity, limits, sequences, integration, probability, three-dimensional geometry.

The Baccalaureat specialite mathematiques exam is a moment of truth. The grade carries major weight in Parcoursup for formations in France and constitutes a critical criterion for international universities. An FIS student targeting a prepa scientifique, EPFL, or a top-tier Anglo-Saxon university cannot afford a mediocre math grade.

A local tutor teaches physics through the lens of A-Levels or the Hong Kong DSE: direct formula application, numerical resolution, final answer. The French program expects far more than that.
