Getting into Yale with the French baccalaureate: tests, English, calendar and aid

Yale has two features that matter a great deal to a French family. The first is good news: the university reviews every applicant without regard to their ability to pay, international students included, and then meets the full financial need of those admitted. The second is a trap: Yale asks most students at French lycées for an English proficiency test on top of the SAT or ACT, and many families find out late.

Beyond that, the questions families type, "what average for Yale", "how to get into Yale", get the same answer as elsewhere: no threshold, but a file built over several years.

What average do you need for Yale?

Yale publishes no minimum average and does not convert French grades. Admitted students are at the top of their class, in their school's most demanding curriculum; beyond that, essays, letters and what the student did with their lycée years make the difference. The numbers give the scale of the challenge: for entry in 2026, Yale received 54,919 applications and admitted 2,328 students, about 4%, from 75 countries.

A 15 out of 20 does not translate itself for an American reader. The school profile, class rankings and teachers' letters do that work, and that is where a French application is won or lost.

The SAT or ACT, required

Yale requires an SAT or ACT score from every applicant. AP or IB scores may be added, but they do not replace it, and neither do baccalauréat results. October and November sittings in the final year can still count for the early round. For a student in the French maths specialism, SAT Math is the strong point: I cover the preparation in SAT Math from a French lycée.

The English test many families forget

Yale requires an English proficiency test from applicants whose first language is not English and who have not spent at least two years in an English-medium school. That is the case for most students at French lycées, even bilingual ones, even in international sections. The test comes on top of the SAT or ACT, not instead of it.

Yale accepts the TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge English Qualifications, the Duolingo English Test and InitialView, and states what it considers competitive scores: for example 7 or above on IELTS, 185 or above on Cambridge qualifications. A student who passed C1 Advanced at school may already have what is needed; otherwise, the test is scheduled before the autumn of the final year.

The Yale calendar, as the university publishes it. Single-Choice Early Action by 1 November, decision in mid-December. Regular Decision by 2 January, decision at the end of March. The dates are the same for American and international applicants, and are checked every year on Yale's website.

Financial aid open to international students

This is the point French families most underestimate. Yale is one of a handful of American universities that review all applications without regard to ability to pay, whatever the nationality, and that meet the full demonstrated need of admitted students. An international student is eligible for the same aid as an American one.

In practice, requesting aid does not count against the application. The calculation of need follows the university's own rules: plan ahead to know what the family will actually pay.

How to get into Yale from a French lycée

The plan spans three years. In the first two years of lycée: a demanding curriculum, strong results across the board, activities pursued in depth. In the spring of the penultimate year and over the summer: the SAT or ACT, the English test, the university list, first essay drafts. In the autumn of the final year: teachers' letters, the file, the early application if Yale is the first choice. The general mechanics are explained in Do US universities accept the French baccalaureate?, and the specifics of the most selective universities in Getting into the Ivy League from France.

That is the path we build at Carmine: strategy, tests, essays, letters, financial aid. For maths and the SAT, I prepare students in private lessons.
